1) Tree Planting Campaign to Commemorate the World Ozone Day
To commemorate the world ozone day, tree planting was done in 59 locations in Jaffna. “Green Layer” being an organization promoting green cover in the peninsula, provided the plants. With the help of our member PP Mahesan, we received the help of the government officials in identifying the places. PP Mahesan being the Government Agent of Jaffna, connected us with the dynamic Divisional Secretary Mr. Sutharshan and he coordinated very well the implementation. Green Layer has a large nursery with food plants such as mango, Jack etc. and big trees that could give ample shade and green cover such as mahogany, banyan etc. After they received `the details of the site locations, Green Layer provided the suitable trees based on soil conditions. Green Layer requested us to plant in premises and not along the roads to ensure after care.
On the same day RC Colombo South also took part in a symposium along with 3 other Rotary clubs and over 20 Rotararact clubs. President of Green Layer Mr Sasikumar and UNIDO Quality Improvement Environment Manager Mrs. Sumathy Rajasingham delivered their address at the
symposium on the importance of green cover to protect the ozone layer and wellbeing of mankind RC Colombo extend the gratitude to President of Green Layer Mr. Sasikumar, Divisional Secretary Mr Sutharshan and our member and G A Jaffna PP Mahesan for all the support the provided for the success of this project.
